Wren300 is a tercentenary celebration of Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) – Mathematician, Astronomer and one of the country’s most distinguished Architects, best known for the design of many London churches, including St Paul’s Cathedral. The WREN300 Square Mile Churches Project is supported by the Diocese of London, the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the City of London Corporation.

Stone Conservation Lecture Evening

Oliver Caroe discusses conservation of stone in relation to Sir Christopher Wren. Pierre Bidaud and Steve Webb provide ‘A walk through the New Stone Age.’

Double act, Pierre Bidaud (The Stonemasonry Company) and Steve Webb (Webb Yates Engineers) start the evening with their collaborative talk ‘A Walk through the New Stone Age’. They will discussing future projections from the pre-fossil fuel past – offering new solutions in stone construction in the context of today’s social and environmental challenges.
Guests will then have a rare opportunity to hear from Oliver Caroe, one of the country’s foremost ecclesiastical architects, and Surveyor of the Fabric to St Paul’s Cathedral. He will be talking about the conservation of stone in relation to Sir Christopher Wren.
Finish the evening with a glass of wine and see demonstrations of HD3D digital surveys completed as part of the WREN 300 programme. Meet the people behind the current programme of conservation work including Cliveden Conservation, Terra Measurement and Restorative Techniques. Members of the public, students, conservation professionals welcome. Cliveden Conservation is a recognised IHBC CPD provider.

Stone masonry experience day – have a go at letter cutting
13th April 2023 (10-11am, 1-4pm)
Discover stonemasonry. This interactive ‘have a go’ day gives you the opportunity to experience letter cutting, marking in stone and lime pointing.

If you fancy trying your hand at being a stone mason, don’t miss this interactive experience day. There will be opportunities to ‘have a go’ at letter cutting, marking in stone, and lime pointing. You will also learn all about mortar repairs, indent repairs, repointing, mortar and stone analysis.
• 10-11am: Learn about the basics of stone conservation from expert stonemasons
• 1.30pm: Pointing of indent demonstration. Audience can ‘have a go’ at pointing
• 20 min Letter Cutting sessions at 11am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm
