Programme Overview
Stone is an important material that is found throughout the country used as a principal material in the construction of traditional buildings. Gaining a basic understanding of geology, classifications of stone, common defects, how to care for it together with a hands-on opportunity to work with stone will give a greater understanding to those working with or planning to work on stone building stock.
Why attend this training day
- Develop an understanding of basic geology
- Learn how to recognise common faults and issues affecting stone – weathering, detailing, mortars
- Gain hands-on experience and an appreciation of the skills required to cut and shape stone using traditional tools

Architects, Project Managers, Surveyors, Building Contractors, Stonemasons
Prerequisites / Level
Open to all. Note: those with a deep pre-existing knowledge of stone may gain less from the day
Workshop Programme
- 0900 – 1015 Session One: Introductions, briefing, basic geology, basic lime cycle, challenges in maintaining historic buildings, identifying common issues.
- 1015 – 1045 Break
- 1045 – 1230 Session Two: Approach to repairing stone, investigating, undertaking surveys, recording, diagnosing and developing solutions.
- 1230 – 13.30 Lunch
- 1330 – 1500 Session Three: Practical sessions learning about stone through ‘doing.’ The chance to cut a letter or letters, experiment with surface finishes/tooling gain a ‘feel’ for stone as a material.
- 1500 – 1515 Break
- 1515 – 1630 Session four: Continuation of practical session concluding with wrap up and recap session.
