Programme Overview 

To show the two different methods of running (on the bench and in situ). To know the materials and their uses. To understand the method of mitering.

Course Objectives / Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the parts and construction of the running mould.
  • Preparation of bench ready for running.
  • Mixing the correct materials.
  • The need for reinforcement in the mould.
  • Running the moulding.

Who should attend: 

Building contractors, plasterers, conservators and any one with an interest of decorative plaster work.

Workshop Programme

  • Day 1. Session One. Demonstration of casting length of cornice on the bench. Explanation of materials, the need for the laths and the hessian within the mould, the need for the release agent. Students prepare materials and commence casting. All students to have completed casting so all participants have a length of cornice. 
  • Break
  • Day 1. Session Two: Demonstration of running basic panel mould in situ. Explanation of materials and the setting out. The need for correct mix. 
  • Lunch
  • Day 1. Session Three: Students to work in pairs to run panel moulds. Help and guidance given as task proceeds.
  • Break
  • Day 1. Session four All students to complete running in situ and remove their casts from the reverse moulds cast earlier on the bench. Explanation of the next day’s task and recap and any questions.
  • Day 2. Session one. Recap of the previous days task. Demonstration of fixing cast cornice to ceiling. Discuss the need for gaps at the mitre. Students to work in pairs to fix cornice.
  • Day 2. Session two. All students to have fixed cornice. Discuss the task. Demonstration of mitering.
  • Day 2. Session three. All students to start mitring the work they have produced. Help and guidance as task proceeds.
  • Day 2. Session four. Ensure all students have completed the mitering and are all happy with the outcome of the task. Clean up and any other questions.

Prerequisites

Suitable for all plasterers wanting to learn more about plaster mouldings. And basic in situ running.

Course leaders

Colin Alderman has worked for Cliveden Conservation for over 20 years and has 51 years of plastering experience. Colin has taught City & Guilds Level 1, 2, and 3 plastering at Reading College and specialises in solid plastering (flat work and in situ running, interior and exterior). Last year, Colin received his Master Plasterer Certificate, awarded to those who have achieved the highest level of skills in the industry over a number of years and can demonstrate excellence in the art, craft, science and practice of plastering.
