Stone repairs to the historic floor within the Seafarers Chapel

21st August 2024

Bristol Cathedral, through Nick Cox Architects, has commissioned us to undertake a major phase of stone repairs to the floor of the Seafarers Chapel within Bristol Cathedral. This highly sensitive stone conservation project has involved us working with an archaeologist to replace the damaged floor and has required precision and skill to replicate the previously re-laid floor within the 14th-century chapel.

As part of the project, Bristol Cathedral has organised a ‘Conservation in Action Day’ on Thursday, August 22nd (10am-2pm) to allow the public to visit the project site and view our ongoing work to restore the floor in the Seafarers Chapel.

During the event, we will be offering behind-the-scenes tours, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to see the ongoing restoration work and interact with our conservators and stonemasons. Under our expert guidance, visitors will also have the chance to try their hand at stone carving, making this a truly interactive experience.

This project has provided a rare opportunity to uncover the history of the floor. Working alongside the Cathedrals archaeologist and project team, we have revealed several previously unrecorded vaults. Their discovery has significantly enriched the history of the building, making this a project of great historical significance.
