Keeping up to date with conservation skills

25th July 2019

It has been a busy first half of the year, not only with conservation projects but also training and conferences. Three of our conservators travelled to Edinburgh to undertake a six day course learning the art of scagliola with Cristina Beretta. Scagliola is a technique of imitating marble and semi-precious stones, using scagliola (a type of gypsum derived from Selenite), animal glue and pigments.

Our conservators were able to learn a number of methods to create different marbles and semi-precious stones, gaining a great admiration for the art in general. Cristina’s method of teaching left space for imagination, while respecting all the traditional steps. They seemed to have so much fun that they didn’t want to come home!

Tom Flemons and Polly Westlake attended the ICON Triennial International Conference in Belfast. The Conference provided a platform to engage with the latest developments in conservation of cultural heritage, exchange knowledge and find networking opportunities to support and promote professional standards of conservation across the UK.

The Conference theme explored the latest research, practical applications and innovative thinking across the sector. Tom Flemons was invited to talk to delegates about the award-winning conservation works carried out to the Central Hall floor, Mount Stewart at the National Trust property as part of the Conference.

Lewis Proudfoot and William Skinner attended the Building Limes Forum ‘Traditional Mortars Symposium’ in York along with other conservation industry professionals including masons, conservators, architects, surveyors and engineers, to present and discuss shifting perceptions and research regarding traditional mortars and their use. William Skinner detailed the effective use of earth and earth-lime mortars and delivered a talk about our current project at Bradwell Abbey.

Cliveden Conservation has been accepted as a corporate member of the Heritage Trust Network and looks forward to speaking at their conferences and networking events later this year, and we are excited about developing our CPD and training offering over the coming months.
