The Hot Lime course covers everything from the use of lime mortar in historic buildings, the chemistry of limes and cement, inappropriate and appropriate mortar types and the current developments in the lime revival. By the end of the day you will learn how to specify and maintain lime mortar for heritage buildings.
Hot Lime Course Content
- Basics – Safe practice, incl. PPE and storage.
- Historic uses and chemistry of limes and cement.
- Lime Mortar in Historic Buildings – Local materials and regional variation. Renders, mortars and lime wash.
- Compatibility I – Inappropriate mortar types and the problems these can cause.
- Compatibility II – Appropriate mortar types and the benefits of their use. Environmental concerns incl. carbon footprint, recyclable and reusable material, and insulation.
- Specification – How to specify the right mortar.
- Maintenance – How to ensure the longevity of mortars.
- Current Developments – The evolving hot-lime revival incl. the work of Stafford Holmes, Historic England, SPAB, and others.
