The popular BBC Two and BBC iPlayer six-part series, ‘Hidden Treasures of the National Trust’ returns to our screens Friday 10th May (9pm BBC Two and BBC iPlayer) featuring members of the Cliveden Conservation team at Kingston Lacy.

In the first programme viewers will be taken to Kingston Lacy, a lavish family home re-imagined as a Venetian Palace in the rural Dorset countryside, where the 2,000 year-old Philae Obelisk is in need of repair. Cliveden Conservation can be seen in action as they clean the obelisk and repoint open or weathered joints using lime mortar which has been carefully matched to the granite.

The Philae Obelisk is one of a pair of twin obelisks erected at Philae in Upper Egypt in the second century BC. It was discovered by William John Bankes in 1815, who had it brought to Kingston Lacy. The 90-metre-high Egyptian souvenir now takes pride of place in the garden and is cared for and maintained by the National Trust.
